Consider our purple, orange and midnight roses for your Halloween blooms!
Black roses do not exist in nature and are often exquisite tones of deep red, maroon or purple blooms dyed, sprayed, dipped or burned to achieve darker hues. Black roses are not only rich in color, but also in significance and meaning - and we see them in their full glory at celebration of life ceremonies but also on Halloween night.
The most common symbolism tied to black roses is that of death, mourning or tragedy. Yet, just like the phrase, “when one door closes, another one opens”, black roses can imply the end of a meaningful time in one's life, but can also be a lovely indicator of the start of something new. Signifying a rebirth or a major change, black roses are known to represent optimism and hope.
The history of the black rose dates back to Ancient Greece and Rome when the mysterious flower was used as a symbol of power and strength. Black roses are dominant in the fashion world, exuding sophistication and timelessness, just as the quintessential little black dress or crisp black suit.
Rei Kawakubo, the world renown Japanese designer (and founder of popular fashion brand Comme des Garçons) in an interview with Another Magazine, references black roses in her Autumn/Winter 2022 collection. She declares that she chose the "non-existent" blooms because they represented "freedom", and only with freedom can people be truly who they are.
